A collaboration with fellow artist Kite, Cosmologyscape transforms collective dreams into public art, blending Black and Lakota symbolism to create spaces for rest and reflection.
Professor Alisha B. Wormsley’s multi-year project Cosmologyscape debuted as a public installation in Brooklyn on September 20 as part of Creative Time’s 50th anniversary public art commission. Co-created with artist Kite, Cosmologyscape invites the public to share their dreams, which Wormsley and Kite transform using Lakota symbols and Black quilting patterns. This evolving “cosmic quilt” serves as a collective archive, reflecting both individual and communal dreaming practices. The project aims to reinvigorate dreaming as a tool for self-understanding and collective healing, highlighting the importance of dreams within Black and Indigenous traditions.
In addition to the digital quilt, Wormsley and Kite installed a series of sculptures in Ashland Plaza, adjacent to the Brooklyn Academy of Music. These sculptures, shaped by the shared dreams, create spaces for rest and reflection, encouraging individuals to connect with the cosmic and dream realms. The project debuted during the Creative Time Summit 2024 and will be on view through November 3, 2024.
